It is strange to say: Universities in Iceland are… It is just as if you would say: Cities in Iceland are… There are neither enough cities nor enough universities to justify any general statements. In fact Rekjavik University, the one we go to, with its more or less 3000 students, is the second largest university in Iceland. Only the University of Iceland has more students – and the two of them differ in almost every other point as well.
For example, while the RU is a private university which is tightly connected to the economy and which concentrates mainly on the application, the University of Iceland is public and gained a traditional and high academical standard over the last 100 years.
Well, this is rather impossible for RU, as it has only been founded 18 years ago. The campus consists of one large and very modern building. They started to build it in 2005 and it was supposed to map our solar system. However, the crisis came and forced them to stop – so now there is only a “Mars”, a “Venus” and a “Uranus” hallway. All leading into the “Sun”, which is the center of the building, a round and very bright lounge.
In Iceland it is a tradition that every house has a special stone which is placed in a corner of the house. But as the “Sun” does not have any corners, there is a pillar instead, on which the stone of RU is mounted – a piece of a meteorite that has fallen on earth about 4000 years ago.
